The long wait is over, it’s every gardener’s favourite season! Spring is just around the corner and if you’re anything like us, you’re probably itching to start on your garden soon. But before you dive headfirst into yard work, load up on tips and tricks to make your gardening experience far easier this season.

Spruce Up By Tidying Up!

It’s easier to work in a garden that’s clean and neat. You wouldn’t want to have pesky weeds or dried up leaves slow you down in your gardening tasks, right? By cleaning up your garden and yard, you can make the most of your days doing other major gardening tasks for the rest of spring. It’s also no question that a clean garden is a view anyone would love to wake up to!

Get started on your garden spring cleaning with these tasks:

  • Sweep and rake up any leaves and debris from the winter season.
  • Add the raked up leaves to your compost.
  • Remove any weeds that have survived the winter.
  • Trim path edges with a spade.
  • Flush out your watering system.

A Garden Check-Up

To get your garden ready for spring, inspect your garden and equipment for signs of damage. Having these in tip-top shape will make it easier for you to perform other gardening tasks throughout the season.

  1. Fences and Gates. Check the fence panels or gates for signs of weather damage. Look out for signs of rot and decay in the wood. Replace the broken segments and structures to reduce the risk of unnecessary incidents. Doing so can keep you and your pets safe! Finish up by power washing the panels to remove the dirt and applying two coats of stain or wood preservative once it dries up.
  1. Outdoor Furniture. Check your furniture for mould or other types of damage. If you do find mould, allow the piece to dry out before approaching the spots. Scrub the surface with a dry brush until it clears. Let it fully dry before performing further cleaning.
  1. Hoses and Fittings. Check your hose and fittings for signs of cracks, ruptures, or kinking. Repair the leaks immediately by using a rubber patch and superglue. If the damage is too extensive, replace it entirely.
  1. Garden Tools. Clean and oil your garden tools before spring. This includes the ones you have hung up in the shed. Sharpen the tools that need sharpening as well to improve their performance. To prevent the spread of disease through bacteria and fungi, give your bladed tools a thorough clean by scouring them with hot water mixed with a strong detergent.
  1. Pots and Planters. Check over your containers and take stock of your planters. Replenish the soil in each planter before spring starts to give your plants a good start for the blooming season.
